Avocado Egg Yolk and Olive Oil Hair Mask Recipe

In the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying out lots of at home, DIY recipes for my hair and skin. I’ve gotten really intrigued by how many combinations you can make, with natural ingredients, to really put health back into your skin and hair. For many of us we’ve tried countless products and spent lots of money on things we thought would give us the skin/hair of our dreams. The truth is I’ve never really felt like anything I’ve bought was so amazing that I would never be willing to try something else. Now don’t get me wrong – there are lots of products I love, but I really enjoy being a bit of a mad scientist in the kitchen to make various masks, creams, lotions and scrubs. Not only do the ingredients really put moisture and shine back into your hair, but they are super affordable. Today I made and did an at home hair mask using ingredients you likely already have in your home; olive oil, eggs and an avocado.

My hair has been getting noticeably most dry and brittle in the last few weeks. I have fusion hair extensions in and in order to keep them healthy I wash and blow dry my hair every other day. I also tend to curl my hair a lot more now to blend my hair extensions so I’ve been feeling like it really needed some TLC. I use a variety of hair care products that I like (my current shampoo of choice Degrease by Maple Holistics is and conditioner is Silk 18 by Maple Holistics), but I avoid using lots of conditioner in my hair because it always seems to weigh it down. When I needed to put moisture and shine back into my hair (and hair extensions) I am loving this easy hair mask.

Avocado: Avocado oil helps rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp. A rich source of proteins, amino acids and vitamins, avocado helps soothe the scalp and promotes long, strong, healthy hair growth.

Egg yolk: Egg yolks wont only make your hair softer, shinier, and healthier, but it helps you to grow it out long as well. They are also loaded with protein which strengthens your hair.

Olive oil: Olive oil is truly a powerhouse when it comes to hair, skin and beauty applications. Its rich, moisturizing properties make it ideal for use on your hair.

To make an at home avocado, olive oil & egg hair mask:

  • 2 egg yolks (not the white, just the yolks)
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil (organic if you have it)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • place into a mixing bowl and mash very well until it turns into a paste

Make sure to mash everything really well otherwise you will learn the hard way (like I did) that pieces of avocado are going to fall all over the floor. I would likely use a small food processor next time to get it very well mixed.

Once you have your paste ready, wrap your shoulders with a towel and then begin to cover your hair thoroughly from root to tip. If you have long hair like me this mixture is more than enough; if you have shorter hair you can cut this mixture in half. Once your hair is completely covered, toss it up into a bun and cover with a plastic bag or a shower cap. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes and then wash your hair like your normally would. At the end of your shower, run cold water over your clean hair to lock in all of the moisture and shine.

Let me know if you try this hair mask and how it worked for you.
