My birthday weekend – 35 isn’t so bad after all

This post is a bit late considering my birthday was March 27 but it’s been a busy last few weeks with Easter and just lots of time being spent with friends and family. I love Easter it is one of my favorite holidays and it was so nice to have my birthday this year fall on this holy day. I have had my birthday fall on Easter I think two other times in my life but as a child and it brings back wonderful memories for me. As some of you may know who follow my blog and social media last March I lost my mother to a terrible battle with lung cancer.  The month of March is a hard month for me now because it brings back so many memories and feelings from this time last year. She passed on March 17 so ten days later when my birthday comes it is still a sad time for me. This year having my birthday on Easter meant a lot to me. Easter reminds us of the sacrifices our Father made for us and I think of all the sacrifices my mother made for me. It’s also a day of rebirth and renewal. The day Jesus rose from the dead. I thought about this a lot as my birthday approached and thought it was a symbol for me to rebuild and renew my spirit. I thought about how my mom would want me to celebrate and live my life. I know she is always with me and that she will never leave me. So this Easter was surely emotional but it was a beautiful day with my husband and family.

For my birthday dinner me and John went into New York City to TriBeCa which is a small part of Manhattan. It has some of the best restaurants and cute homes and loft buildings. I used to work in this area for years so it brings back so many amazing memories of my time in NYC. We went to a place called American Cut which is a steakhouse and it was so nice inside.

Very dark wood, dim lighting and candles. We got dressed up and enjoyed some wine and a nice dinner. I loved my dress which I bought a few months ago on ASOS – almost all of my dresses are bought on there because they are great quality and amazing styles. I wasn’t a huge fan of orange but I actually loved it once I put it on.

For my hair I did some big curls using a clip less curling iron and then used some hairspray and a teasing comb to make it really full. I had also recently gotten my hair colored to a natural medium/dark brown with some bayalage highlights which add some warmth and dimension. I was loving dark dark brown but of course I got bored and wanted some warm pieces so right now I am really how it came out.

On Friday night we attended a March Madness game in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center. It was Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin and UNC vs. Indiana. We took the long drive which was nice and the game was so fun! We are big Notre Dame athletics fans and attend at least one football game each season, so this was really cool. The energy for March Madness was unlike any basketball game I’ve been to before.

Overall I had a great birthday and my friends and family made me feel so special. My friends at work surprised me by decorating my office and getting me some amazing gifts and a cookie cake too! We had a great lunch together and then I had dinner with some of my other girlfriends that week as well. Getting older isn’t so bad, if anything it is a great time reminder that I’ve met so many amazing people who care and are so wonderful in my life.

Also thank you to my best friend Sylvia for this amazing book which I know will be perfect (though I hear very sad) but perfect since the author battled the same cancer my mom had. It’s called When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.

Leading up to my birthday in honor of my mom I got 2 tattoos – one is the word STRENGTH on my wrist in script, to have as a constant reminder of where I get my strength from (my  mother) and the other is 3 doves on my ribs. The 3 doves symbolized the wish my mom had for my on my wedding day which she never made it to, she died 2 months before we said I Do. She wanted to have 3 doves released on my wedding day to symbolize me, my husband and her – that we would always be together. I love this tattoo so much, it means my mom is always with me, on my side, by my side, never leaving me alone <3
