Wedding Invitation Save the Date Photoshoot Ideas and Tips

So this past week we finally got to taking some professional couple photos! It’s been a long time in the making and I knew we had to get on it soon before it got too cold here in NJ. We also are getting ready to finalize our guest list to send out our save the dates for our wedding in June. We’ve had a long engagement so we never took official engagement photos to announce the news when John popped the question. We did however want to have some photos taken to use for our upcoming wedding save the dates. The only person in the world I wanted to take them is my best friend, since the fifth grade, Sylvia. She is a NJ wedding photographer and I have to say, completely unbiased of course, she is the most talented photographer I know when it comes to capturing natural light and the connection between people. She made my fiance feel comfortable even though he was shy and nervous in front of the camera. We met at a park in Kenilworth, NJ an hour before sunset. She told us this would be the best lighting and I believed her, but I didn’t realize just HOW beautiful the lighting at this time of day would be. The best time to shoot portraits is very early in the day time or right before sunset. It was absolutely breathtaking!

For our shoot we did two different looks for me and one for my fiance. It is much easier for me to change into a new dress on site than it would be for him to change, plus what girl doesn’t like to change up her look. I did one dress in a light pink/blush tone color (which is the main color for our wedding theme) and one dress in black for a more glamorous look. Both dresses were soft and flowing which is great when the wind picks up or when you want to have some movement. The pink dress I got from ASOS and the black dress I got from Bloomingdale’s. I like the idea of one soft color and one dark color so you can get a good variety in your looks. For hair I kept my down with larger ringlets; I used a barrel curling iron for my hair first, then did my hair extensions, clipped them in and then ran my fingers through them to loosen up the curls.

I did my own hair and makeup for our shoot. After many years working on photoshoots I’ve learned how to do hair and make up fairly well for photography and natural light. For make up I will list below the products that I used. I also had just gotten in a new set of my Bellami Hair Extensions which I wore for this shoot. The color is 1C and I got the Bambina set which is 160 grams of hair. They curled up so well and added a nice touch to the shots, especially the shots where it is more of our profile and silhouettes. I love Bellami hair since it is so soft and matched perfectly for this special day. My sure that your hair extensions match perfectly and that you have layers in your hair so the hair extensions and your hair blend naturally. The key is to look natural. Take in all the beauty around you and be relaxed. I know it’s hard, especially for the guys, to be comfy when someone is on you with a camera, but forget the photographer is there, or a good photographer can help to guide you along the way. Sylvia was great with this and guided us as we went along. While I am much more relaxed in front of a lens, John needed some warming up. Most guys do, so don’t worry. Just pretend you’re out on a date and no one else is around…

Overall the best part about this day is that two of my favorite people in the world were involved in making these photos happen: my best friend and my fiance. For your save the date photos remember to be yourself. Loosen up. Smile and get shots of both smiling, serious and just in the moment. I wish we took a few more shots of us just being ourselves and smiling. I also would recommend having your fiance work on how to loosen up his hands a bit and not be so tense. In the end I love my photos and cannot wait to begin picking our save the date cards and invitations. I can’t wait to share more of my wedding planning with you all 🙂
