A Healthy Caesar Salad for Keto Friendly Dieters

It’s been almost 2 months since I’ve been following a high fat, moderate protein and low carb diet – also know as the Ketogenic Diet or Keto Diet for short. It is when you eat most of your calories from fats and restrict the total number of carbs you consumer to under 50 grams per day. Many consider it similar to the Atkins Diet, with lots of the focus on fats and protein and for me it has been super easy and satisfying to follow. I know many people will scream and say “but I cannot ever give up carbs” but to be honest even before committing to this lifestyle (I hate the word diet) I  never ate a ton of carbs anyway, save for oatmeal in the morning, sweet potatoes and brown rice. You’d rarely ever see me eat bread or pasta so this was not a hard transition for me. Anyhow, for so long before this update I never used high fat salad dressing and always went with low calorie or fat free versions – never realizing that those dressing were likely worse for my diet because they are loaded with tons of sugar!

Now that I can eat more fats that allows me to open myself to salads that use creamy dressings, something I have not had in so long! Ordering a chicken Caesar salad would have been blasphemy before if I followed the “rules” of dieting that said anything fatty was going to make me fat which is so false. When you do a high fat, low carb diet your body kicks into ketosis, which slowly uses your body’s own fat stores for energy. Isn’t it crazy how for so long we are taught that low calorie and low fat foods are better, but once fat is removed the taste is gone and in its place is chemical sugars and other sweeteners.

I love finding new salad dressings that are low to no carb, which is where my eye goes now when I purchase products – if there are less than 3 total carbs and almost 0 are sugar it’s okay for me! This Caeser Dressing by Walden Farms is amazing – it is calorie free, zero carbs, zero sugars. They make a wide variety of products from pancake syrup to chocolate syrup (which I also bought to add to protein shakes) and is fine to use on a keto diet. While they don’t have fat grams they don’t have sugar either.

To make my salad I use organic romaine lettuce, chopped it up and add in a big mixing bowl after washing. I then add some sliced black olives (healthy fat), some canned organic albacore tuna (healthy fat and protein), slice up some cucumbers which are low in net carbs and then add my dressing and mix it all up. I can easily eat two bowls of this in one sitting it just tastes so good! The tuna is great too to eat when you are focusing on proteins that are good sources of omega fats. I highly suggest looking into adding these dressings to your salad and swapping them for the low calorie ones which are loaded with sugar. Ever since lowering my carb and sugar each day I am much less fatigued, never have a sugar crash and never crave carbs. I am also never boated and never feel hungry, surprisingly with eating a lot of healthy fats I always feel full – which is a good thing.
