Recipe: How to make whole wheat pepperoni pizza twists

There  is no better smell than a home made fresh pizza baking in the oven. Now I will admit I don’t make a very good pizza by hand, but after making a similar version of these on Thanksgiving I decided to make a few edits and try again. This recipe is great for watching the football game, for a quick after school/work bite to eat, or as a  way to kick that pizza craving. It only takes about 30 minutes start to finish.

The first thing you need is the dough. Most recipes for home made pizza twists are going to call for layered dough that you can pull apart, but what I find is they are way to thin to hold all the ingredients inside. So I bought a can of I believe Pillsbury whole wheat artisan dough. I rolled it out to be aboue 8 inches tall and 18 inches long.

I layed them out on sprayed tin foil though as I look back I should have used wax or parchment paper instead. Then I took Applegate Naturals pepperoni and cut it up into a bunch of tiny pieces. I don’t normally eat any meats like this but Applegate is all natural and I trust their brand. I used about 3/4 of this package and sprinkled it all over the long piece of cough and patted it into the dough to hold.

Now that the pepperoni is on I begin to spread the shredded cheese all over. I use Natures Promise which is Stop and Shop’s version of organic and natural foods. I got the lower fat mozzarella cheese and used it to cover the entire area.

I suggest leaving about 1/4 of an inch plain all around so that the ingredients inside don’t spill out onto the tin or alumnim foil. That can get messy fast.

Once everything is on the dough push it into the dough again to help it stick. Then cut the dough into vertical strips about 2 inches wide. You will then grab the strip by both ends and twist them in opposite directions. One goes forward rotating down and the other rotating coming toward you.As you roll some of the ingredients may come lose, just squish the rolls in both hands and hold them tight.

Lay them down on the sheets and push down to keep everything in place. Put in an over than has been preheat to 400 degrees. Leave in for about 20 minutes or until the outside looks brown and crisp. I usually will put a small bowl of organic pasta sauce near by for dipping. Everyone enjoys these little bites and you can make them bigger or smaller next time, enjoy!
