Latest Healthy Haul of Protein, Snacks and Supplements

I posted on Intagram and Snapchat (MissADS1981) about my recent purchases of healthy items and wanted to do a quick run through of everything I picked up on my last visit; from protein powder to supplements, healthy snacks and protein bars. I usually do large purchases and stock up whenever there is a good sale, so this time was no different. I ran out of all of my favorite protein bars. 

Since I am doing the keto diet for about 1 more week I had no reason to purchase bars, but now that I am coming off of it and slowly adding in some more carbs, I was ready to get a few items that I had been missing. That is probably the one thing I missed the most doing the ketogenic diet/low carb diet is not having a protein bar at night. For me they are like a treat, and they helped with my carb cravings but I’ve been so good sticking to my routine for the last 5 weeks so I didn’t purchase any to avoid being tempted in the house.

When it comes to snacks I picked up a box of Ostrim High Protein Low Fat jerky sticks, 2 bags of Caveman Foods Chicken Jerky and then a few flavors of Oh Yeah! Nutrition One protein bars. I wanted to try a few flavors to find my favorite before buying a full box. I also have been eating jerky a lot while on the ketogenic diet for protein and fat, though these are pretty low in fat but are good even after keto for high protein snacking. I love the chipotle honey flavor and each serving has 12 grams of protein. Of the One Protein bars I liked the brownie and the chocolate chip mint ones the best. They only have 1 net carb per bar. Make sure to calculate by doing the total number of carbs, minus the number of grams of fiber. These bars only have 1 gram of sugar so even having these while on keto or coming off of keto are not so bad. They also satisfy my sweet tooth really well.

I love jerky lately as a quick, high protein snack. I love both the Ostrim and the Caveman Foods jerky because it tastes really fresh and isn’t crazy high in sodium like a Slim Jim. I like these in between meals when I need something to hold me over, or to help me reach my daily protein macros for the day. I love the teriyaki flavor and the chipotle honey – I don’t usually like anything too spicy or hot so the sweeter tastes always work best for me. They do make me thirsty so make sure to have a water on hand when you snack on these bad boys.

The Oh Yeah One bars come in a ton of flavors! I wanted to get a few and test drive them to see which ones I would like. They have a bunch of other flavors I didn’t pick up too, but these were a good start. I have tried their birthday cake bar too and it even has sprinkles on it! It makes for a messy car ride but always a tasty treat. I tried all four of these and I may just buy their sampler box which they sell on amazon too to get a mix of flavors. These are great when I want to throw one in my purse to have when I am caught running errands and don’t want to just grab something at the convenience store.

Here is a quick look at the macros for the Oh Yeah! Nutrition One Protein bars:

210 calories / 7 grams of fat / 24 grams of carbs / 10 grams of fiber / 21 grams of protein

Next are the vitamins and supplements I take every month but had to stock up on since I am almost out of them. I switched from a lot of gummy vitamins and supplements to all pills since on the ketogenic diet you have to limit your sugar intake. I never realized that so many of the gummy and chew vitamins were adding almost 12 grams of sugar to my day! Now I take only pills and that kind of stinks because my daily gummies were like a treat, but the added sugar was not a good idea. I always take turmeric, biotin, a multivitamin with iron and a probiotic. I also take quite a few other things but these were the four I needed to replenish.

I also picked up a few beauty products as well – a facial scrub and bar of bath soap. I love the Derma E scrubs because they are exfoliating without doing a ton of irritation to my face. If you have oily skin the last thing you want is too much scrubbing going on – it will cause your skin to produce even MORE oil. The anti-wrinkle vitamin a glycolic scrub is good for normal to oily skin and leaves my face clean and moisturized. It never feels stripped of moisture and great for getting rid of dead skin cells or dry/flaking skin. I also got a bar of Nubian Heritage coconut and papaya soap with vanilla beans. This is very moisturizing and never makes my skin feel dry or tight. It also smells really good too.

I also got some more protein powder and some high protein almond milk too for making protein shakes. I have been talking about how much I am using Vega protein lately and this plant based brand just works well for me, my needs and with my stomach. I have IBS so sometimes certain protein can hurt and irritate my stomach but this is super easy to digest and also gives me vitamins and greens all in one. I got both the Vega One French Vanilla & Vega One Chocolate. I also have been buying the Orgain Organic protein almond milk to use for my protein shakes. It is very thick and adds 10 additional grams of protein to my shakes. You can get it sweetened or unsweetened.

The Vega One All-in-One protein shake is 170 calories per scoop and 6 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbs, 7 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein. The shake mixes up pretty thick and has a great taste even though a lot of plant proteins don’t always taste that great – these do.

I bought a 2.2 liter water jug to help me drink more water throughout the day, some stevia packets for my daily cappuccinos and some Spectrum Berry flax seed which I like too add to my night time cottage cheese cup. Flax seed is a great way to get your daily omega 3s and still taste delicious. I also put stevia packets in my purse, car and at work so I always have them ready for a coffee run. Anytime I get a coffee they only have aspartame or white sugar so having these with me keeps
