How to Make the Perfect Protein Shake

I love protein shakes, but not all taste delicious or blend perfectly. For a long time I used to purchase a shake at the end of every workout at the gym, because they always made them so delicious. It was something about those shakes that was different – they were like heavenly milkshakes, but mine at home never tasted as good. Then I realized it all came down to the blender and the ingredients. At first a few years ago when I started to weight train I had a pretty craptastic blender, probably something I got for cheap and it never seemed to mix my shakes well. I also used very little ice, probably skim milk and just the protein powder. Now I have mastered making the best protein shakes and invested in a great blender. I think that, at least for my shakes, has made the biggest difference.

I own two blenders; a Nutribullet & a Breville. Both were given to me as gifts, one for my birthday and one for my bridal shower. I love both of these so much and they make the most amazing smoothies and protein shakes. The Nutribullet is great for quick, on the go drinks and is super easy to clean and transport. My Breville is a counter top, much more high tech blender that makes a shake for me and my husband in one use but it is a bit more work to clean up after. I love both of them and they’ve made a big improvement on how the consistency of my protein shakes turn out.

For ingredients I use a protein powder (currently I am loving the Vega Sport Performance Chocolate, Isopure Zero Carb Vanilla and Vega One Vanilla). Next I use at least 1 cup of ice to make it thicker like a milkshake. Then I add a peanut butter for a thicker texture and a delicious taste. Right now I love adding peanut or almond butter since I am focusing on adding more healthy fats to my diet. I love the D’s Naturals Fluffbutter or Trader Joe’s Organic Peanut Butters and sometimes Buff Bake spreads. These add more protein and healthy fats to my shakes. For milk I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk which makes the shake even thicker, as opposed to just water or water and skim milk which can make it a thinner protein shake. Plus almond milk is even more healthy fats. I add a dash of ground cinnamon and if I want the shake even thicker I add 1/2 of an organic banana.

The ultimate tip that I can give, is make sure you LOVE the taste of your protein powder. It really comes down the finding a flavor that you enjoy drinking all of the time, and the good news is so many brands make really tasty flavors like cinnamon bun, brownie chocolate and peanut butter. I am a big fan of peanut butter flavors and chocolate over vanilla, but hey that’s just my personal preference. Look for the one that works best for your diet, macros and taste buds 🙂
