The relationship between a dog and their owner is a relationship unlike any other. It’s a friendship that can teach you about responsibility, endless love and loyalty. You naturally want to make sure your dog lives a long and happy life. To do this, you need to make sure their health and fitness are a top priority. The last thing you want is for your dog to develop an illness due to a bad diet or lack of sufficient exercise. So to ensure your dog shares your life with you for as long as possible, here are simple things you can do.

Exercise regularly

We all know how important taking your dog for daily walks is. But many owners often underestimate just how beneficial exercising their dogs can be. It can help keep their weight down, exercise their joints and release energy in a positive way. Some dogs get anxious when separated from their owners, and this can sometimes lead to destructive behaviour. The amount of time you should exercise your dog will vary depend on its age, size and breed. So find out the recommended exercise time is for your dog and create a routine. This will keep them fit, reduce stress and may even benefit your own health as a result. Remember to keep your dog hydrated during and after exercise and always be consistent.

Give them a balanced diet

A dog’s coat, skin, energy levels and weight can be significantly affected by their diet. If you give your dog food that is not good for them, it increases their chance of developing serious health issues. If your dog has been experiencing a lack of energy, a greasy or flaky coat or gained weight, it could be due to an improper diet. So research nutritional dog food and treats and check the ingredients listed on the labels. You could also consider making your dog’s food yourself. This allows you to control what they are eating by adding fruits to your dog’s diet or other ingredients that could be beneficial to them.  Ensuring they have a balanced diet will keep their weight down and keep them looking and feeling good. Always do plenty of research and talk to your vet before making any drastic changes to their diet.

Make regular trips to see your vet
