Going back to dark hair after ombré lightening

For the longest time I’ve had dark hair, and any time I have tried to lighten it I like it, but then I always revert back to brunette.  Maybe I just feel more “myself” with dark hair, but you always have to take a chance and try something new. Before my wedding I kept my hair super dark, but after the big day was over I wanted to go ombre. Ombre was the color all over Pinterest and I really wanted to just give it a go. I was happy with having a multi-dimensional color and even went back another time to lighten it up some more. After awhile though my hair was starting to look and feel a bit dry and unhealthy. When you have lighter ends you tend to see the breakage easier and it was feeling a bit broken. I had to tend to my hair a different way when it was lighter (a lot of moisturizing to prevent breakage and using a purple shampoo to prevent brassiness) and finally I decided to go back to dark hair. I was at first a bit nervous that the lighter pieces were going to peak through and not color over on the first time, but it did! I was super happy to have my dark hair back and that it took so well. It also felt a lot healthier, smoother and softer too!

Before with Ombre & After with Dark Hair

I also had my hair stylist cut my hair again and it looks so much healthier just having it dark and with the bottoms all gone. I go to Hair Ambition Salon in Nutley, New Jersey and my go to girl is Crystal who is also the owner. She always helps me to pick out what to do with my hair and I’m so impressed that I was able to go back to dark hair over ombre so easily. As I posted on my Instagram there are a few products that I love using and that have kept my hair healthy over the last few months. I wanted to share those with you below because I really do like using these brands and products.

My Current Favorite Hair Care Products

One thing that is pretty important to me is to find brands that are cruelty free and don’t test on animals. All of these brands do NOT test on animals. I also believe that all natural ingredients have made a huge difference in the health of my hair which has always been pretty dry and brittle.

For shampoo I use currently Maple Holistics Argan shampoo daily or every other day. I only wash my hair daily if I’ve worked out and have sweated a ton and there is no way I am going to go to work with hair like that. Otherwise I will usually wash it every other day. This shampoo using all natural ingredients and oil to put moisture back into your hair without making it greasy or weighed down.  It is also sulfate free so it’s safe to use on color treated hair like mine.

Two times a week I use the Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Shampoo which is super clarifying. It helps to remove build up on my hair and makes it feel squeaky clean without striping it of moisture. Apple cider vinegar on it’s own is great to do once a week as a rinse on your hair to remove dirt and oil, but this just makes life easier. It also smells like apples which is a nice scent for your hair. It is a bit pricey so I don’t use a ton of it, just a dime size and work it in mostly on my scalp and around the hair line and temples where I sweat the most.

After my hair is nice and clean I love using my Maple Holistics Silk 18 Conditioner. Paired with the Maple Holistics Argan Shampoo this has brought my hair back to life and made it much healthier. I used to lose a ton of hair in the shower, like handfuls of broken hair, and now it’s only a small amount which is normal. I have tried so many conditioners and masks for my hair to put moisture back in, but I have bought this conditioner four times now. It is my absolute holy grail and smells unreal! The smell reminds me of the Aria hotel in Las Vegas which has some sort of vanilla in it. This conditioner makes my hair so soft and smooth without making it really flat and weighed down. I really love this brand and use their Maple Holistics Vitamin C Serum in the morning on my face before my makeup as well.

Make sure when you rinse the conditioner out of your hair to hit your hair with cold water for a few seconds before ending your shower. It helps to seal the hair and makes it shinier.

After my shower I towel dry my hair with a soft towel and pat it dry, never tossle your hair with the towel or rub it. When your hair is soaking wet it is super delicate and can break so easily. Just use the towel to pat the hair. After that I spray a few pumps of Honest Company Conditioning Detangler. This is a super light mist and is not sticky, it feels like water. I use a wide tooth comb like the Conair wide tooth comb seen here to easily go through my hair. Never brush your hair with a regular brush when it’s wet, you will break you hair. Use a wide tooth comb and brush from the bottom up; work the knots out on the bottom and then brush the rest.

After all the knots are out I use one pump of the Tara Smith Hair Care Base Coat Serum. This helps to prevent frizz and give my hair a healthy finish. It is a clear serum and not sticky or thick at all, I have it in my hands in this picture so you can see it. I love this line of products and did a full review on her line a few months ago which you can read here.

I hope that you enjoyed learning about the hair care products that I love and have been using. I am also so thrilled that lightening my hair didn’t destroy it and that covering up my ombre color was so easily achieved. Let me know if you have gone through this hair color change and what your experience was like.
