A chocolate greens smoothie that doesn’t taste like grass

I have to admit when I wrote this title I didn’t even realize just how funny it was, but then when I re-read it I had to leave it. How many times have you tried to add greens powder to your protein shake and all it did was taste like grass, literally. I never really got the hang of using greens powder with a protein shake. I always used to add it to my green juices, which I make with an apple, cucumber, spinach, water, 1 lemon squeezed and a scoop of From the Earth Greens powder. I liked how that tasted because it was more tart/sweet but not meant to be like a shake. Some days I just want a tasty protein shake, but if I added my usual greens powder it just tasted awful. When I was shopping for greens the other day I noticed that a few brands are now making their greens powder using cocoa or a chocolate flavor to it, so I figured I would buy a tub and try that in a chocolate protein shake that I usually make with NutriWhey Belgian Chocolate protein powder. I figured that the cocoa flavor of the greens, mixed with the chocolate protein powder would help to cover or mask the green taste pretty well. The good news is, I was right!

I decided to give this recipe a go and have been making one almost every other day every since. It has the perfect balance of sweet; I use 1 scoop of NutriWhey Natural Protein in Belgian Chocolate flavor, 2 tbsp of Just Great Stuff Powdered Peanut Butter, 1/2 cup of organic Stonyfield skim milk, ice, water and then 1 scoop of Garden of Life Perfect Food Raw Organic Greens Powder made with Chocolate Cacao. I combine all of these things into my Nutribullet cup and then blend for one minute and it comes out so delicious!

Just Great Stuff Powdered Peanut Butter allows you to enjoy the taste of peanut butter but without the added fat grams. I like to use this in my shake to give it a sweeter taste to cover any green flavor, but it doesn’t over power either. It is gluten free, 100% natural and USDA organic. I use two heaping table spoons of this and it blends very well. 2 tbsp is only 45 calories,  unlike 2 tbsp of real peanut butter which is close to 200.  The Garden of Life Raw Food Raw Organic Green Super Food comes in regular flavor or the one made with real raw chocolate cacao, which is a great super food. This tub is under $30 and is USDA organic and comes from organic farms. Not only do you get tons of great nutrition from the powder but it is packed with probiotics, sprouts and veggies with lots of antioxidants. As you can see from the ingredients list it is quite extensive. I make sure to have this in my shakes now since I know it is so packed with good for you ingredients. 1 scoop is only 35 calories and 5 grams of carbs. It does have a greenish color to it, but it does not have an over powering smell or taste at all. If you are just starting to use greens powder, this could be a good introductory product for you to try.

I have written a few times about using NutriWhey protein powder in my shakes and baking. I like that it uses no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. It also has tiny pieces of real belgian chocolate in the powder so at the bottom of your protein shake you get a little bit of extra chocolate which is a nice treat. It gives me 23 grams of protein in one scoop and is only 170 calories per scoop.

When your shake is well blended you really don’t see the color green, just a small amount. I take this with me to work, add some ice cubes to remain cold and then sip throughout the morning. It keeps me full until lunch time and I really enjoy drinking it.

All of these items can be ordered online and will last you for a good month of making a smoothie every day. I make mine during the weekdays when I am packing for work. On the weekends I am usually super busy running around so I don’t always have time to make a shake, so if you want one that can be easy to take on the go to work this is a good one that I really love and will stick to in my routine.
