What are some healthy ingredients you can add to your salads?

Many people think that salads have to be boring in order to be healthy for you, the truth is you can add a lot of fix ins to your greens to make them tasty as well as nutritious. I personally love salads, especially with lots of added ingredients so below I will share some of my favorite items that I like to add to mine.

When it comes to the lettuce I usually always go with either spinach or romaine. I always buy organic lettuce, and even though it might be a bit pricier, it tends to taste fresher and last longer in the fridge. I buy mine at Trader Joe’s and get the plastic bag packs that are usually good for a salad for 2-3 servings each.

For the salad in this post I went with some spinach lettuce, fat free crumbled feta cheese, organic cucumber slices, sun dried tomato, grilled heat and serve chicken strips, edamame, red bell peppers and fat free balsamic vinaigeratte dressing.

Fresh ingredients always taste great in a salad and the additional veggies make it even more nutritious. The fat free balsamic from Trader Joe’s tastes great but be careful with your serving sizes with dressing. Salad dressing can be the one ingredient that can turn a healthy salad into a non-healthy salad quickly. I avoid creamy dressings and usually go with just apple cider vinegar but sometimes you just want a real deal dressing. This one fits the bill because it is a sweeter taste that pairs well with the flavors of the sun dried tomato and the cheese crumbles.

I also love adding grilled chicken for protein and sometimes when  I am short on time I will use the Trader Joe’s Heat & Serve chicken strips. You can chop them into small chunks and heat them up and then add them on top of your salad. Each package has four servings and the meat is very flavorful and lean.

I also love edamame; as a snack and a salad topping. This package is great because they edamame is already deshelled and quick to just toss into the mix. I also like this on its own as a quick snack as well or added to a cold bean salad.

Make sure that when you make your salad to always add a protein to it or else it will not fill you up. By adding veggies you also add in more fiber which fills you up too. Just make sure to be smart about your dressing choice when having salads for lunch or dinner.
