My Viviscal Review – What results you can expect and should you take it?

After taking the hair growth supplement Viviscal for over a year here is my review

Viviscal Extra Strength - Grow Your Hair Faster, Longer, Heathier

About two years ago I had seen the commercials for Viviscal hair regrowth program; a break-through vitamin/supplement that claims to help you regrow your own hair in areas that may have thinned over time due to stress, hormone changes, pregnancy, etc. I was intrigued which I have to admit I never am from watching infomercials on television. I usually find them if I’m up late on the couch and just have the t.v. on in the background while I try to fall asleep. The commercial caught my eye because it seemed to show many women who have thinning in the areas usually in the temples. Now I don’t have thinning so much, but years and years of using hair extensions I have lost a good amount of hair certain areas from being too rough in removing my wefts. For years I was very uninformed and honestly very stupid for using bonded and glue in hair extensions. I didn’t notice the damage I had done until years later when I swore off using hair extensions to let my natural hair breathe and grow in. The constant pull on the hair by wearing them, and also from removing them not as carefully as I should, left hairs on the wefts every time. Needless to say I wanted to give up doing this to my hair and find a way to nurse it back to health and fullness in a more natural way. That is what lead me to try Viviscal.

since using viviscal the temples and hairline area for me has gotten stronger and completely filled in.

Now that you have the back story of “why” I decided to take the plunge and order Viviscal I will talk to you about my experience with the product and where I am today.  The cost now is around $45 for a one month supply of the Viviscal pills. When it first came out I believe it may have a been a bit more, but the price seems to be consistently around that mark. I order mine every month on Amazon and it is a staple in my vitamin and supplement routine now. While it is certainly not as cheap/inexpensive as say biotin or a hair, skin & nails vitamin or supplement it is much different than they are and therefore costs more.

What it does (or claims to do): Treats temporary hair loss and thinning hair. Results will be noticeable after 6-8 weeks, with full results noticeable after 6 months. I have to stress that this isn’t something you are going to see overnight, or even 3 months later. I didn’t see any difference in my hair until at least 4-5 months later. You take 2 pills per day; 1 in the morning after food and with water and 1 at night after food and with water. At first I have to admit the price was getting annoying so I decided to take only 1 per day to make the pack last longer, but that wasn’t smart and I knew that I should be taking 2 per day so I made sure to stick to the recommended dosage per day. What I did notice after taking it consistently for a few months was that not only was my hair feeling a bit stronger and shedding less (it sheds a lot!) but after I would say 6-7 months areas that were a bit thinner on the temple area where I had place hair extensions over the years DID start to fill in. I didn’t even notice it was happening, meaning I didn’t all of sudden see tiny hairs sprouting, it was something just gradually I began to notice. I think after you take a product for that long you just don’t focus on the results every day and over analyze it, you just start to see it when you do your hair one day and say “wait a minute, it is filling it!” My bangs started to grow in faster and my hair felt so much more healthy and less breakage was happening.

Unlike a Rogaine or other prescription or non-prescription topical solutions, Viviscal is not something that I have to fear once I stop the hair will fall out or go away. Many people report using Rogaine with some success but you can’t just stop taking it. I had no desire to be dependent on any product for the rest of my life so Viviscal for me has been a very good option.

This is what the Viviscal pills look like, they are more like tablets.

This is not an overnight solution – make sure if you buy this product you intend to keep up with it every month like clock work. It will take time, but it does give results. (at least it did for me, which is why I still use it to this day)

There a few variations of the packaging, it seems the company changed the colors at some point. Always buy from their site or a trusted Amazon seller.

100% Drug Free Dietary Supplement

No.1 Selling Hair Growth Supplement Worldwide

Contains AminoMar? and Biotin

Viviscal Extra Strength Hair Growth Program is a 100% drug free dietary supplement that is scientifically formulated with the exclusive marine complex AminoMar, which is clinically proven to nourish thinning hair and promote existing healthy hair growth from within during the Anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle.

How Viviscal Works

Viviscal supplements are scientifically formulated with the important nutrients Biotin, Zinc, and the exclusive and clinically proven AminoMar to help maintain normal healthy hair growth from within. You’ve already probably heard of biotin and zinc but what is AminoMar? It is an exclusive ingredient to Viviscal and is a proprietary marine complex AminoMar™. A Professor from Scandinavia discovered from his study of the Inuits in the 1980’s that their great hair and skin was as a result of their fish and protein rich diet. He isolated the key protein molecules from the Inuits’ diet and it was from these origins that AminoMar™ was created.

Overall all how did I feel after taking (and continuing to take Viviscal)?

I will continue to use it and buy it. It is something that while it is a bit pricey to invest in every single month I feel it has helped my hair in areas it had been thinning due to hair extension wear and it feels much healthier to me. The only concern for me is that if you buy it today you MUST give it time to work. Don’t expect it to sprout hair tomorrow, or next week or in 3 months. This is a journey and the years of damage and shedding doesn’t fix itself over night. I recommend trying this if hair loss or thinning is a concern to you before you look for more serious options.

  1. Hi Adrienne,
I am “Lissa” in the infomercial and was so happy to find your blog today. I really love the product and think it’s awesome that you have a forum to share with other women like us who have hair loss at the temples issue. Good luck with everything.

  2. Did you notice your hair growing noticeably faster? I just got engaged and realized that I need to start growing my hair out for the wedding, but I’m not sure it will be long enough! (And I really would like to avoid using extensions!) I thought about taking viviscal, because I heard it can help your hair grow longer in a short period of time. Did you notice this, and would it be worth the price if you weren’t worried about getting thicker hair (just longer)?

  3. My hair has been growing faster but I can’t say for certain it was Viviscal. I take quite a few vitamins and supplements so they may be causing the faster growth as well. I also take b complex, folic acid and collagen. Hope this helps

  4. Hey Jersey Girl!

Philly girl here! Thanks so much for your article. Before I begin using this product, I do have a few questions:

    1. I heard it can cause a lot of acne. I am not acne prone, but I certainly don’t want to start now! Did you see this side effect ?

    2. Another side effect I heard was that woman started growing more hair on their face and other parts of there body besides their head. Did you notice this?

    3. Is this a supplement that you need to take for a life time? If I tried it out for a year and got results, do I need to continue using it all my life? If I do not, will the results revert back to the very start?

    Thanks!

  5. Hello! Here are the answers to your questions:
    1. it did not cause any acne for me. Since you are applying just to your lash line in a small amount it wont cause any facial acne, at least none for me at all.
    2. if the liquid were to get on your face then i believe it could cause some hair to grow, but that is why you apply with a brush and let it dry. i would avoid putting it on then going right to bed. apply and let it dry completely.
    3. If you stop using latisse or careprost the lashes DO fall out. You have to upkeep the use or they will fall out over time. You can use it daily until you achieve the look you want, then use every other day and you will be ok.

  6. Is vivsical something you have to use permanently?
I have been on the birth control pill for just over a year and my hair is noticeably thinner. Only I notice. My family and friends dont. My husband thinks my hair is the same but I know that it is not. I have shedding and breakage. My hair and scalp also used to be oily and now they are dry.

I am hoping to stop the pill in the next few months because I am tired of putting the chemicals in my body. Since I had a big hair shed for about two months when I started the pill I am afraid of getting a big shed when I stop the pill. I cant afford to loose hair to a shed when I stop the pill or to even get thinner hair when I stop the pill. I already have thinning spots in front where I can almost see scalp. This is from taking the pill. I never had thick hair but I had a lot more hair than I do now.

I am planning on trying a biotin supplement, an adaptogenic herb supplement, and a herbal hair and nails supplement. I was also thinking about adding viviscal and hair volume. I hate being dependent on any prescription or non prescription vitamin and supplements for the rest of my life and I dont want to take anything for the rest of my life. I dont believe in taking any prescriptions for the rest of my life and will not take anything prescribed by a doctor so I dont know why I took the birth control pill.
Does the viviscal and hair volume have to be taken permanently? Is there a supplement that you can take to make hair regrow and stop taking after it regrew and the hair will stay?

  7. I have gone off and on of viviscal. When I have gone off I did seem to feel like i was shedding more so I went back on. I agree, being dependent on any pill or supplement is not the best outcome. I do believe that to prevent the shedding you should look into a few things:
    – get a blood panel done to find out what you may be deficient in. somethings i look for are zinc, iron and b vitamins
    – make sure to eat a high protein diet
    – make sure to get your scalp in top condition, many of us over look that. you need ot keep the scalp clean to make for a great foundation for healthy hair.
    – biotin helped me and so did collagen chews (i personally enjoy the neocell ones)

  8. Hello,

I have some questions for you:

    1. I’m 29 and I’ve always had thin hair. Its long (on my shoulder blades), but its just never been thick or full.
Will Viviscal help with thickening the hair? This is my main goal in trying a supplement.
    2. Let’s say I take it and it works to thicken my hair, do I have to continue taking it forever or can I stop once I reach my desired results?

  9. For me, which is all i can speak to, viviscal helped to fill in areas of my hair line that were thinning a bit. especially as a big hair extensions user most of my life i did my fair share of pulling my own hair out in the process of removing them. (bad i know). it seemed to work for me by regrowing areas that were thinning bc of pull out, but i cant tell you if it actually made my hair thicker. it did show a difference in my hair
i still take it to this day. as with any supplement it isnt something to take, get results and then walk aawya from.

  10. My hair is thinning in the part area on the top of my head. Will it help filling in that area as well as make my hair thicker?

  11. Hello there 🙂 I’m a concerned viviscal user & I didn’t know where to turn to ask questions till I found your blog….I’ve been using the product a little over 2 months & I’ve noticed MORE shedding than usual, it’s kinda freaking me out honestly :/ have you heard of anyone else with this problem? Should I stop or continue to see if anything changes? Thanks for listening
    -concerned gal 🙂

  12. hello, i did not experience shedding. your eyelashes shed on their own everyday, perhaps you are noticing it more now that you are more focused on your lashes. It took about 2-3 months to see the real effects of the careprost but I have to say I have bought it over and over again with great success. The medicine itself is helping the folicals to be stimualted to grow more and faster lashes. they get stronger too. i would say hang in there and give it another month.

  13. Hi there, Viviscal has helped me in hair growth. I had hair thinning, I tried vitamins and viviscal together and I am getting my hair and volume back. Now I can try different hair styles and increased volume has changed my overall look as well! Thanks to Viviscal.

  14. Thank you for sharing your story. I just purchased 3 month supply of Viviscal for $39 from their website. Amazon’s price is higher.

  15. Is anyone struggling to get the pills out of the package? I have to resort to scissors. I’m 62, female, with thinning hair. Scalp visable. Embarrasing. Dermatologist recommended Viviscal and Rogaine Foam for Women. This is my second month on the products, no noticable improvement (I know it takes time) but my main issue is that I would prefer to receive the pills in a jar! Any suggestions? thanks!

  16. Unfortunately their packaging is the same as it has been for years now, I dont see them moving to a bottle anytime soon.
I continue to use viviscal as well as a b complex gummy too which is good for hair 🙂
