Pump up the (hair) volume – Giovanni Cosmetics More Body Hair Thickener Review

Just like makeup and clothes I am always trying on new hair products for size. I have been using various volumizing styling products but really haven’t found one that works all the time for me. I used to be a big fan of Fredderic Fekkai’s Full Volume Mousse but it hasn’t been working as well for me lately. Maybe it’s the cold weather, who knows but my hair has been falling flat lately (no pun intended). So I decided to start trying out a few new brands this year that are more organic or natural to see if perhaps that is a better option. This one I picked up online by Giovanni Cosmetics called More Body Hair Thickener – it is a volumizing styling gel.

Normally I would never grab for a gel anything, it always seems sticky and slimy – not something I want to be putting in my hair before blow drying it. I always assumed gel was for curly hair to help scrunch it and make it hold the curl, but I was interested to see if a gel would work for giving me volume without making my hair feel gross. I ordered it online and it was around $10-13 dollars and it is a full size 6.8 Fl Oz which is a lot of product. You will notice right away the clear color and you will see below the texture as well.

This product says it uses “Eco Chic Technology” and leaves your hair soft but firm. It seals split ends after infusing thickness, pumps up the volume with tremendous shine, adds condition, style & body.

How to use:

After I wash my hair I apply a little larger than pea-size amount to the palm of my hand. I rub it around to emulsify it and warm it up with my skin then I apply all over the hair, working it in from root to shaft. After it has been applied by hand I use a brush to run through my hair to help evenly coat the hair from root to tip. I let my hair sit for about 5-10 minutes to air dry a little so it is not soaking wet when I start to blow dry. I then use a round brush and begin to blow my hair out all over. You will see that this product does not leave your hair oily, greasy, sticky, tacky or any of the above. It almost feels like a leave in conditioner on the hair with no residue. As you begin to blow your hair dry you will see the volume already and smoothness without a huge amount of shine (which I prefer, I don’t like looking too shiny since that sometimes looks greasy).

Here you can see the texture of the product. It is a clear, shiny liquid that isn’t very thick or pasty. This is the amount I use for my entire head and I have hair to the middle of my back. My hair is also color treated and this is safe to use on color treated hair as well. A little of this product goes a long way so don’t use more thinking it will make it even thicker, you don’t need more than this. If you do apply more you will probably get the opposite effect and your hair would probably be heavy and weighed down making it appear flatter.

Go the extra step with velcro rollers:

After my hair is dry I can easily style and go on with the day, however if you want to lock in the volume and make it even longer lasting I use 4-5 extra large velcro rollers. I section my hair at the crown and use one there to add some height (not a poof, but some height/volume haha). I also use one under that in the back to lift the hair and one on each side as well. I roll my hair in these, use some roller clips to secure them, or you can use bobby pins as well. I apply a light hair spray like the One & Only Argon Oil Spray which is very light and soft or the Helmet Head by CHI which is for stronger hold. I leave my rollers in while I do my makeup so it keeps my hair out of my face and these give you so much volume! I leave them for about 35-45 minutes and take them out right before I head out the door.

Overall I really like this Giovanni Cosmetics More Body Hair Thickener. It has a nice texture, it doesn’t leave my hair weighed down and it really gives me volume. If you are in the market for a new volumizing product and looking for a cruelty free or organic option this is a great hair care line.
